The Impact
**The Impact**
.Not every impact we leave behind can be seen, and not everything unseen disappears
Since the beginning of human existence, people have sought to leave behind something
that proves they once lived. Some have wanted their names to live on through their
children and grandchildren. Others have pursued fame, knowledge, or wealth, while
some have simply hoped to leave something that people would remember them by after
.they were gone
Yet we rarely stop to ask ourselves: Is the impact we leave behind truly what we think it
?is? And is it limited to what we achieve or what others remember about us
In reality, impact takes many forms, and some of them may be deeper than we imagine.
There are things we leave behind intentionally, and others we leave without even
.realizing we have created them
**The Impact We Leave on Others**
Some people believe that leaving a lasting impact requires great achievements, helping
as many people as possible, or having a well-known name that others will remember. But what if, sometimes, an impact is nothing more than a single word or a small gesture that
?remains in someone's memory for the rest of their life
People do not always remember the material things others have given them, but they
may remember very clearly how they were treated and how those people made them
.feel about themselves
.Perhaps one of the clearest examples of this is the impact of childhood upbringing
Imagine a child growing up in a home where all they hear is criticism and belittlement.
No matter how hard they try, their efforts are never appreciated. Instead, they may
.constantly be compared to others and made to feel inferior
As the years pass, that child may grow up carrying a deep sense of inadequacy, even if
they eventually have money, nice clothes, and all the things they were deprived of
.during childhood
Can money alone make up for all those years in which that child never felt loved or
?appreciated
They may succeed in life and achieve everything they once dreamed of, but that does not
necessarily mean they can erase the effects of those experiences simply by acquiring
.what they once lacked
On the other hand, another child may grow up in a completely different environment. A
child who has someone willing to listen, someone who stands up for them when they are
.treated unfairly, and someone who appreciates their efforts even when they fail
This child receives more than just material things. They also develop a sense of security
and appreciation. Over time, those feelings may grow into self-confidence that stays with
.them even after they grow up and leave their parents' home
Here, we can see how two very different childhood experiences can leave two very
.different marks on a person's life
The first child may spend years trying to prove that they deserve appreciation, while the
second may grow up knowing that their worth does not depend on other people's
.opinions
However, we cannot judge a child's future based on their childhood alone. Life brings
other experiences and relationships that can change many things. Still, this does not
diminish the importance of the impact that everyday treatment can have on a child's
.heart and mind
**An Invisible Impact That Remains**
People may not realize how deeply their actions affect others. A father who refuses to
listen to his child may think he is simply dealing with an ordinary situation, while the
.child may feel that they are not worth listening to
A teacher who humiliates a student in front of their classmates may forget the incident
.as soon as the lesson ends, while the student may remember it for years
On the other hand, a parent may stand up for their child in a situation that seems
insignificant to everyone else. Yet, to that child, it may be proof that they are not alone
.and that someone will stand by them when they need it
Imagine two children who are both hit by the same teacher. The first knows that
complaining at home will not make a difference and may even lead to blame or
punishment if they speak about what happened. The second knows that their father will
.listen, find out what really happened, and never leave them to face the situation alone
The experience may be the same, but the message each child receives is entirely
.different
The first child may learn to remain silent, even when treated unfairly, while the second
.may learn that they have the right to stand up for themselves and ask for help
This does not mean that every child will respond in the same way. Similar experiences
.can leave different effects depending on a person's personality and circumstances
What is worth reflecting on, however, is that some situations adults consider ordinary
.may become deeply influential memories in a child's life
**An Impact We Cannot Replace**
One of the strangest things about human life is that we may spend years trying to make
.up for certain things without ever being able to recover what we have lost
Someone who never received enough attention during childhood may try to compensate
for it with money. They may buy everything they once dreamed of or achieve the success
.they believe will finally make them happy
Someone else may search for appreciation in their relationships, trying to please
everyone and giving them as much as possible, believing that treating people well will
.guarantee a place in their lives
But what happens when they do not receive the appreciation they have been waiting for?
They may feel disappointed and begin to wonder why others do not recognize everything
they have done for them.
This is where another problem begins. When people tie their worth to what they give
others, they may find themselves constantly giving, even when it comes at the expense of
.their own well-being
Not everyone we help will stay in our lives, and not everyone we treat kindly will return
.that kindness
This does not mean we should stop helping others. It simply means we need to
understand the limits of our responsibility and avoid making other people's appreciation
.the only measure of our worth
The impact we leave on others does not give us the right to possess their feelings or
.guarantee that they will stay with us forever
**The Impact of Closeness and Neglect**
There is another kind of impact that is just as important: the one we leave on the people
.whose presence we have grown accustomed to
Sometimes, we find ourselves smiling at strangers and giving them our attention, while
treating the people closest to us with coldness or anger simply because we have become
.so used to having them around
We may postpone conversations with our children or make questions about their studies
the main focus of every conversation, forgetting to ask how they are feeling, how their
day went, or what has been on their minds. Sometimes, a child simply needs us to talk to
.them as a friend, not just as a mother or father
In a family, we all understand that there are boundaries and roles that deserve respect.
However, constantly repeating phrases such as "I'm your father," "I'm your mother," or
"You can't talk to me like that" may teach a child how to remain silent rather than how to
.express themselves
Over time, we may never truly know what is going on inside them or what they once
.wished they could tell us
We may only discover this much later, when they have grown up and it has become
.more difficult to reach them in the same way we could have when they were younger
Even if we try to build that closeness later, not every moment will have the same
.strength, and not every opportunity can be recovered
And so, we may lose precious moments with the people we love, whether they are
relatives, friends, husbands, or wives, simply because we said, "Later," "Not now," or "We
".have plenty of time
We do this because the person is still beside us, and without realizing it, we assume their
.presence is guaranteed
But we never truly know how many more times we will have the chance to experience
.those same moments
Perhaps some conversations are not worth postponing, and some moments should not
.be treated as though they will last forever
No one can guarantee that the people we are used to having around will always remain
with us. Nor can we be certain that every disagreement can be resolved or every
.relationship restored after years of neglect
A day may come when we try to return to a relationship we once lost, only to discover
.that the other person has moved on and that what we once shared is no longer the same
The point is not to abandon our responsibilities or give others all our time. It is simply to
remember that relationships need attention and that having someone in our lives does
.not mean they no longer need to feel important to us
A simple walk, an ordinary conversation, or a moment of laughter with someone dear to
.us may become one of the most cherished memories they carry
Perhaps we never truly understand the value of those moments until they become
.memories we can no longer return to
**The Impact That Remains After We Are Gone**
If we leave an impact on others through the way we treat them, we can also leave one
.through our ideas and achievements
How many writers have passed away centuries ago, yet their books are still being read
today? How many scientists died without ever knowing the full extent of the influence
?their discoveries would have on future generations
Agatha Christie is perhaps one example that illustrates this. Her novels continue to be
.read many years after her death
A book written by someone may outlive the time in which they lived. Someone born
decades after the author's death may read it and discover an idea or a piece of
.knowledge they need
A person may create something simply out of passion, never imagining that one day it
.could become useful to people they have never even met
And this brings us back to our first question: Do we need to know that others will
?remember us in order to leave an impact
.Perhaps not
A writer may never know who has read their book. An inventor may never meet
everyone who has benefited from their invention. And someone who offers a small act of
kindness may never realize just how much it has changed another person's life.
.Perhaps the greatest impact we leave behind is the one we never get to know about
**Do We Need to Leave an Impact?**
Perhaps the human desire to leave an impact comes from the fear of disappearing
completely after death. We want our names to remain, or at least for something of us to
.continue existing in this world
But should this desire become a reason for us to live only to please others, remain in
relationships that hurt us, or pressure ourselves into achieving things we do not even
?want
One person may choose to have children because they want to build a family and see
themselves as ready to take on that responsibility. Another may choose not to have
children because they are not yet ready for such a responsibility. Someone may choose to
become a writer or a scientist, while another may prefer to live a quiet life away from
.fame and attention
.None of these choices makes one person more valuable than another
Not everyone is required to have their name written in history books, and not every
.quiet life is a life without impact
However, not everything we experience in life is our choice. Sometimes life takes us
down paths we never planned to follow, and we find ourselves in places we never
.imagined we would reach
We may not have the power to change everything that has happened, but that does not
mean we should lose hope in repairing what we can or doing whatever is within our
.power for ourselves
We can give ourselves the chance to live in a way that brings us happiness and peace. We
can pay attention to the things we truly want before our lives become nothing more than
.a continuous attempt to please others
Perhaps it is better to focus on the kind of life we want to live rather than spend it trying
.to guarantee what will remain of us after we are gone
**In the End**
Impact has two sides that may seem contradictory, yet they share one truth: every human
.being can influence another person's life, even without intending to
,We may leave a wound in a child's heart because of something we said without thinking
or we may help them develop confidence through a simple gesture we barely paid
.attention to
We may spend years trying to please others, only to discover that some of them do not
remember what we gave them, while a single sentence we once said to someone else
.may remain in their memory for the rest of their life
That is why our goal should not be merely to make others remember us. Instead, we
should become more aware of what we leave behind in their hearts and recognize that
every word and action has the potential to create an impact, whether positive or
.negative
Not everything we leave behind is something we chose, and not everything we choose
.will last forever
Perhaps what matters more than leaving a great impact on the world is making sure we
are not the reason someone gets hurt when all they did was trust us, that we do not
neglect those who chose to stay by our side, and that we do not forget ourselves while
.trying to earn the approval of others
We may not remember everyone who has passed through our lives, but some people
.leave something within us that the passage of time cannot erase
And we may never know what impact we have had on someone else's life, but we can
.choose how we treat them for as long as they are still here with us
